GGF NM WG Notes 07/12/05 Call began at 11:00 a.m. EDT. Attendees: Mark Leese Eric Boyd Richard Hughes-Jones Jeff Boote Jason Zurawski Susan Evett (scribe) AGENDA 1) Review of Chicago (GGF14) Meeting 2) GGF14: Mark reported on the Tuesday (10-hour) sessions – hard going but very useful. Met with new Area Director. Demoed using the NMWG schema for requests and responses. Mark talked about JRA4, Martin talked about JRA1 schemas, and handed off to Jason. Jason reported on the big changes (choices between certain elements, as suggested by Jeff, that were fairly minor); he will get the new version of the tarball up some time today. Jason summarized Martin’s description of namespaces (hopefully getting the software to not parse the message in its entirety as it goes along). Base namespace is defined, basic elements are defined (data, metadata, etc.) within that. New elements can be added within that namespace; you build upon the base elements using the example schema that we are providing – you don’t need to worry about the namespace parsing as you go along. Jeff gave a brief overview of his presentation on perfSONAR (at GGF14); using (essentially) the NMWG schema for the control plane – doing lookups, responses from lookup service, etc. He feels this is not, necessarily, the most efficient architecture but, since we have to figure out the schema and get everything working together, this is a leg up. Mark asked why Jeff feels this is ‘inefficient’; Jeff felt that XML was not useful for a single architecture but it is very useful for going across several architectures so it will be useful in the end. Mark to follow up on the possibility of a SuperComputing demo. Presentations are on the website – he’ll get the rest of the presentations up soon. Richard has most of the missing presentations and will provide them to Mark if necessary. Area Group Change Now in the Infrastructure Group (along with IPv6, etc.); there will be 2 Area Directors at some point but there is only one at this point. He asked for comments on the email that was sent to the group (15 minutes before) from the Area Director. Documents in Progress Mark wanted to have a brief discussion on what documents are available from Version1 and what is in train from Version2. Richard had offered to collect all the documents concerned with Version1 and was briefly detoured. He proposed to have all the documents collected by September. Mark asked if Boston in October is a realistic deadline to show group progress. Richard said he felt that it was possible. Jason will begin updating the Version2 documents as soon as the perfSONAR work begins to stabilize (he’s been focusing on changing the schemas to meet their needs). Martin said he was going to look at Version1 to use as a basis for Version2 materials. There are a lot of people interested in it (based on website hits). Mark felt the DevGuide could be very instrumental in getting the schema in use. Mark asked if folks agreed that the DevGuide should be published as a “GGF experimental document” and put it out into the community to generate feedback. Based on the feedback, make a ‘standards’ document. Mark asked if anyone in the group was interested in looking at the JRA4 materials? (Is the group interested in establishing a set of standard Fault Messages for the schema?) Jason said the he’d be interested in reviewing the material. Jeff asked if they were talking about extending the SOAP fault type or a completely separate mechanism? Mark said he thought it would be completely separate. Jeff noted that folks still have to pay attention to SOAP faults so that will need to be taken into consideration. Mark felt there were some people who were keen to put some time into it and he didn’t think he should put them off. Mark will propose that the JRA4 guys will work on this; Mark will circulate their material when they complete and we will review it and provide them with comments. Richard suggested that Mark urge them to join the NMWG; Mark felt that they were over-burdened on work at this point so they probably won’t have time for it. Mark asked for final discussion points – none were proffered. The group set the meeting time and date for the next call. ACTION ITEM: 1. Mark to follow up on the possibility of a SuperComputing demo. 2. Mark to finish posting all the GGF14 presentations on the website and any missing presentations (he’s to get them from Richard if he doesn’t have them all). 3. Richard to finish collecting the Version1 materials to get them posted and generate comments by mid-September (so that it can be reported on at the GGF15 meeting in October. 4. Jason/Martin to complete the Version2 material collections so they can be posted, as well. Jason to look at the Version1 material to use as a basis for this. 5. Jason/Martin will have the DevGuide ready for distribution before GGF15; Jason will create a WiKi document to more quickly gather and incorporate comments and changes. Next call is on 2 August 2005 at 11 a.m. EDT. Call ended at 11:52 EDT.
